CPC certificates for children’s furniture

Children’s furniture is a children’s product, so it needs lead limits and a CPC, and some categories have their own mandatory standards: full-size and non-full-size cribs, toddler beds, bunk beds, and infant sleepers each have dedicated rules. Furniture intended for children 12 and under also needs third-party testing and, in many cases, specific hardware and warning requirements.

  • Cribs: 16 CFR Parts 1219/1220 (full-size and non-full-size) with their own drop-side bans.
  • Toddler beds: 16 CFR Part 1217.
  • Bunk beds: 16 CFR Part 1213.
  • Toy boxes and storage bins: entrapment and lid-falling hazards addressed through the durable infant goods and hazard guidance framework.

The baseline for everything else

Furniture without a dedicated standard still carries CPSIA lead limits on paints and substrates, tracking labels, and the CPC requirement with third-party testing for the rules that apply. Tip-over guidance and anchoring instructions belong in the manual: furniture tip-overs are one of the CPSC’s priority safety campaigns.

Questions people ask

Does a kids’ table need third-party testing?

Lead and applicable material rules require third-party testing for children’s products. Structural standards may not apply to a simple table, but the chemical rules do.

What about toy chests with lids?

Lidded storage bins have historically caused entrapment deaths: the CPSC has specific expectations for lid supports and ventilation. Follow the current guidance and test the lid support.

Is antique children’s furniture exempt?

Antique vocabulary does not exempt you from lead limits on items actually marketed for children’s use today. Reproductions and restorations for children follow the normal rules.
