CPC for children’s sewing kits

Children’s sewing kits designed or marketed to children 12 and under are children’s products: they need third-party testing at a CPSC-accepted laboratory and a Children’s Product Certificate citing sharp-point, lead, and small-parts rules, plus tracking labels on the product and packaging. The importer or US manufacturer issues the CPC — marketplaces can request it at any time.

Which rules apply to children’s sewing kits

  • Children’s sewing kits test for lead in threads, buttons, and coated fabrics; small parts by age grade; and functional sharp-point review of plastic or blunt needles for the claimed age.

The testing and certification path

Testing covers needle functional-point requirements (real metal needles require older age grading and honest warnings), button and bead small parts, and lead in threads, felt pieces, and coated fabrics. Kits graded for under-8s typically use plastic lacing needles by design.

Book testing at a laboratory that is CPSC-accepted for each rule, issue the CPC in your own name citing the rules your report supports, and keep the certificate with its test report for at least five years. Marketplaces ask for the pair, not the certificate alone.

Can a kids’ sewing kit include real metal needles?

Yes with honest age grading (typically 8+) and warnings — functional sharp points are permitted when necessary for the product’s function. Plastic lacing needles avoid the issue entirely for younger grades.
